The demographic shockwaves of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Europe produced tremendous change in the national economies and affected the political, social, and cultural development of these societies. Migration historians have begun to connect the various European migratory streams during this period with transcontinental migration to North America. This volume contains empirical studies on German in-migration, internal migration, and transatlantic emigration from the 1820s to the 1930s, placed in a comparative perspective of Polish, Swedish, and Irish migration to North America. Special emphasis is placed on the role of women in the process of migration. By looking specifically at postwar Germany, Klaus J. Bade underscores the relevance of this history in a concluding essay.

Ola Hanson (1864–1927) was a Swedish-American missionary from Minnesota, posted to northern Burma in 1890. He lived with the Kachin people and became fluent in their language, compiling a word-list and eventually producing a Kachin–English dictionary. Their own culture and complex belief system were orally transmitted: Hanson therefore devised an alphabetical transcription for his translation of the Bible into Kachin, and this writing system later became widespread in Burma. First published in 1913, this book was written after Hanson had lived with the Kachins for over twenty years, and offers a unique insight into their culture at this time. It outlines their origins, dialects, law and weapons, as well as the details of Kachin religious beliefs and ceremonies for births, marriage and death. This book is valuable as both an ethnography of the Kachin and as an example of the perspective of an early twentieth-century missionary.

This study of the way in which political parties are funded examines in detail the corporate funding of the Conservative Party and trade union funding of the Labour Party. In so doing the author considers the legal implications of this activity. The election expenditures of the parties come under scrutiny, as does the role of the state in contributing to their financial well-being. The concluding chapters consider arguments for more extensive public funding of the political parties - as proposed by both the Houghton Committee in 1976 and the Hansard Society in 1981. In considering this issue the author draws heavily on Swedish experience, and throughout the book reference is made, where appropriate, to developments in other jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada and West Germany. This important subject is addressed from a legal perspective, though the book is written in a clear and forthright style accessible to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
