史特勞斯家族的故事在音樂史上是獨一無二的。他們在音樂上的貢獻是什麼呢？簡單地說，是帶給人們歡樂的音樂。這種音樂最主要的就是以圓舞曲為主的十九世紀時興的舞曲，包括波卡、快步波卡、稱為Galopp的快步舞曲、方陣舞曲等。這個家族在維也納一隅發跡，終而晉身十九世紀歐洲的皇家舞廳，至少有六位音樂大師出自這個音樂家族，他們的作品還在世界各地響起。史特勞斯音樂王朝的創建者是老約翰˙史特勞斯，他和約瑟夫˙蘭納共同開拓了十九世紀廣受全世界喜愛的舞蹈音樂――圓舞曲（華爾滋）。在他的聲望基礎之上，他的三個兒子約翰、約瑟夫和愛德華也相繼投入音樂事業，三個人努力創作、指揮樂團，到世界各地旅行演奏，歷經半個世紀之久，父子兩代累積的成就使世人無法忘懷史特勞斯家族的貢獻。青出於藍而勝於藍。約翰˙史特勞斯二世是史特勞斯音樂家族中排名第一者，儘管身為音樂家的父親反對他走向音樂之路，但他背地裡仍瞞著父親學習小提琴，大多數的作品都是圓舞曲為主，總計有四百餘首之多，因此被稱為「圓舞曲之王」。在奧國音樂家中為人知曉的程度可能僅次於「音樂神童」莫札特，而「交響曲之父」海頓和「歌曲之王」舒伯特恐怕還要讓著他一點。有關史特勞斯的故事自黑白片時代以來就拍過好幾部電影（「翠堤春曉」、「翠堤春又曉」等）。圓舞曲《藍色多瑙河》，讓世人腦海中永留多瑙河的美麗印象。他的輕歌劇作品也很重要，在這方面的地位堪稱維也納輕歌劇「黃金時代」的第一號人物，代表作《蝙蝠》，每年的除夕夜至新年假期這一段時間必在維也納國家歌劇院以最佳的陣容和全新的舞台設計與導演手法搬上舞台，以這種方式來表達對大師的敬意，數十年來已成為一項傳統。本書緊扣時代背景，追溯這六位各有特色的音樂家。作者博引書信和當時的報導，破解許多圍繞著這個家族的神話。史特勞斯一世的後裔愛德華博士特別為本書作序。
