The lives of massive galaxies are affected by many key processes, including gas accretion and star formation, feedback and quenching, black hole growth, mass assembly, galaxy mergers and interactions, chemical enrichment and stellar populations, dark matter, galaxy haloes, and satellite accretion. These proceedings of IAU Symposium 295 discuss recent progress in galaxy formation and evolution, and plan ahead for future challenges. They cover, from both theoretical and observational perspectives, the lives of massive galaxies from the formation of the first galaxies in the early Universe, through their evolution with cosmic time to massive galaxies in the local Universe. Key contributions deal with recent and near-future advances in telescope technology and massive galaxy surveys as well as computer power for large-scale simulations. IAU S295 benefits advanced students and active researchers who need an up-to-date review of galaxy formation and evolution and its future prospects.

Although low-mass metal-poor galaxies in the local universe have often been proposed as the 'primordial building blocks' in the hierarchical scenario of structure formation, several lines of evidence suggest that this may not be true. Moreover, it is not clear to what extent dwarf galaxies, because they are metal poor and because of their kinematics and structure, can tell us about how star formation proceeded in the early universe. This volume provides an overview and the most recent advances in this debate. IAU Symposium 255 presents the most up-to-date developments in six key areas, including: Population III and metal-free star formation; metal-enrichment, chemical evolution and feedback; explosive events in low-metallicity environments; dust and gas as seeds for metal-poor star formation; metal-poor initial mass functions, stellar evolution and star-formation histories; and low-metallicity star formation in the local universe. This overview is at a level suitable for research astro

Dwarf galaxies are important tools for understanding structure formation and galaxy evolution across cosmic time. These low-mass systems allow us to gain a detailed understanding of stellar, chemical, and dynamical properties in the nearby universe; they also provide a unique window into the complex physics of the early universe. The Proceedings of IAU Symposium 344 present our current understanding of dwarf galaxies, with sections dedicated to: Local Group dwarf galaxies; the interstellar medium and star formation in dwarfs; metallicity, massive stars, and chemical evolution; the dwarf galaxy–environment connection; low-mass galaxies at high redshift; and dwarfs as cosmological probes. Broad overviews from leaders in the field, detailed presentation of cutting-edge results, and short summaries of a wide range of work are included for each of these topics, suitable for both experts and newcomers to the field.

Stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB stars) play an important role due to their high luminosity and production of heavy elements and cosmic dust. They are prime laboratories for studying situations where different physical and chemical processes work simultaneously, on different time scales. IAU Symposium 343 builds a bridge between research on AGB stars themselves and their applications to the modelling of stellar populations and the chemical evolution of galaxies. Our understanding of these complex stars is given using insights into many aspects of physics and chemistry, while very high-angular resolution observations of AGB stars and their surroundings provide strong constraints on stellar theory and how they lose matter through strong stellar winds. This volume also highlights the difficulties in estimating the importance of AGB stars for various aspects of galaxies. Current developments and challenges of these complex objects are discussed for a broad, interdisciplinary audie

Galaxies:Structure and Evolution
90折
作者:Roger John Tayler  出版社:Cambridge Univ Pr  出版日:1993/03/04 裝訂:平裝
Galaxies are large systems of stars, some of which contain interstellar gas and dust. They also contain much invisible matter, which may be in the form of weakly interacting elementary particles. In this introductory textbook, the first chapter introduces the study of galaxies. This is followed by two chapters on observations of galaxies, including our own. There are then three chapters on galactic structure: the manner in which motions of stars determine galactic shape, the determination of galactic masses, and the structure of discs in spirals. Galactic evolution, especially changes in chemical composition over time, is covered. The book concludes with a discussion of the origin of galaxies and their relation to more general questions in cosmology. The book includes mathematical presentation where this enables the discussion to be quantitative.

IAU Symposium 265 presents a unified picture of nucleosynthesis, the production of chemical elements over cosmic time. It explains how this chemical evolution links together the early Universe of the first stars, through the formation of galaxies and their diverse populations of stars, to a Universe of heavy-element rich stars and planets. The first generation of massive stars that drove reionization left their chemical signatures imprinted in the oldest low-mass stars, which we observe today. Chemical evolution is a broad, diverse and rapidly evolving field, due to the ever-expanding capabilities delivered by new arrays of instruments on large telescopes, together with significant advances in modelling and increasing access to large and accurate nuclear, atomic, and molecular databases. Written for researchers and graduate students, the topics covered in this volume provide a comprehensive overview of the scientific progress achieved in recent years.

This last decade has witnessed a revolution in our observations of galaxies; in particular deep imaging with HST and spectroscopy with 10m-class ground-based telescopes have uncovered many objects that are difficult to place along the Hubble sequence. High resolution spectroscopy of extremely faint objects has enabled the study of the kinematic evolution and, hence, the mass assembly of galaxies to unprecedented look-back times for direct comparison with cosmological structure formation scenarios. Thus, it is now possible to study all three aspects of galaxy evolution - their morphological-dynamical, chemical and spectral evolution out to redshift larger than six, exploring more than 95% of the age of the universe. These Proceedings of the IAU Symposium 235 report the considerable progress made in recent years on galaxy formation and evolution, and look forward to the expected breakthroughs in the domain of remote galaxies, with ALMA, the ELT and the next generation space telescopes.

Research on massive stars is undergoing a period of rapid progress, with long-held convictions being shown to be incomplete. While these stars are relatively few in number, they are the main driver of chemical and dynamical evolution in galaxies through their stellar winds and explosive deaths in core-collapse supernovae. Furthermore the impact of massive stars is widely recognized in many areas, as they are often used as tools to interpret the conditions and processes arising in different environments. In parallel, the development of new instrumentation, analysis techniques and dedicated surveys across all possible wavelengths have delivered large amounts of exquisite new data. These data are now providing a harsh test for the current state-of-the-art theoretical calculations of massive star birth, evolution and death. IAU Symposium 329 covers these topics and is therefore an invaluable resource for researchers in the field of massive stars and their evolution.
