卡萊爾在1841年撰著的《論英雄與英雄崇拜》（On Heroes, Hero Worship and the Heroic in History），是英國維多利亞時代的歐洲甚具影響力的一部書。作者在書中將英雄定義為傳遞神旨予世人之人，除了神或者帝王，先知、教士、詩人、文人、學者、革命家等皆是他所論稱的英雄。如：但丁、莎士比亞為詩人英雄；約翰生、盧梭、彭斯為文人英雄等。卡萊爾並於書中提出──穆罕默德之成功在於其對於萬物的真誠，他認為「真誠」是英雄的首要特點。此外，卡萊爾亦曾撰文指責僅有花言巧語的演說家，並無真正的聰明才智。更推崇聖經使人類得到真理與德性的培養，使人生的奧秘的問題得到解答。
