隱修的祈禱，就是一種處於寧靜、純樸的祈禱隱修祈禱開花綻放之處的氛圍，就是沙漠的氛圍傳奇的天主教隱修士多瑪斯．牟敦（Thomas Merton），在1948年出版了自傳《七重山》，該書一時洛陽紙貴、被讚譽為二十世紀的《懺悔錄》。這突如其來的暢銷成就，並未動搖牟敦的心志，他繼續在革責瑪尼修院中，潛心耕耘祈禱、默觀與寫作。1968年，牟敦踏上滿心期待的亞洲之旅，卻因發生意外事故而辭世，身後留下預備出版的《隱修祈禱的氛圍》書稿。在某種程度上，這部遺著透顯出他在悠悠隱修歲月裡的體悟、思索及轉變。牟敦並非不問世事、獨善其身的隱修士，而是深知修士們同樣面對著世間男女無法迴避的深層存在問題，並且認為修院的圍牆不該阻隔他們對世界的責任。牟敦在人生最後階段轉向更徹底的隱居生活之前，曾擔任見習修士導師長達十年的時間，深度培育與近身觀察的經驗，也許令他選擇了自己回應時代需要的獨特方式。正如他的摯友、貴格會神學家史體爾（Douglas V.
