The exhibition “The 60th Anniversary of Israel - Birth of a State: Photo Exhibitions of Paul Goldman and David Rubinger & The Art of Design: Dan Reisinger” marks a collaboration of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei. It attempts to present Israel’s aesthetics to Taiwan and to celebrate the birth of Israel.
Since its foundation in 1948, the Jewish people have gone through sixty years of struggle and of effort. Leaning on their steadfast character, they gradually established their state among the deserts and created one miracle after another. Today, Israel is ranked as one of the most advanced countries in the Middle East regarding the aspects of economy, of freedom and of technology. As Israel’s heroic founder, Ben Gurion stated, ‘In Israel, it is not realistic enough if you do not believe in miracle.’
The exhibition features works of photography and of design from Israel, showing the essence of its visual arts. The photojournalist Paul Goldman(1900-1986) and David Rubinger(1924-) use their lens to record key moments in Israel’s history like an adventurous process. Their images construct a unique history of the country, featuring ordinary people’s life and humorous descriptions about politicians. These unusual photos with sensitivity are also rare historical documents of the country. As for Dan Reisinger(1934-), the winner in design of the Israel Prize in 1998 as well as internationally acclaimed design master, he uses colors in such a free way that his design emanates unrestrained ardor. His three habitual colors are the yellow from the hexangular star, the red of the Russian Liberation Army’s flag and the azure of Israel’s sky, condensing therein the history and the context of the Middle East that are full of creative vitality.
In contemplating the works by these three artists who represent Israel’s national treasures, our acknowledgement goes to the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei for its devotion of promoting culture which allows Taiwan’s audience an occasion to appreciate Israel’s culture.
