Focusing on one of the lesser prophets, biblical scholars from Europe and the former British Empire offer perspectives "this side of" historicist paradigms and postmodernism. They cover theorizing the ancient and modern reader in/of the scroll of Jeremiah; diaspora and resistance in Jeremiah; hope, utopia, and the fantasy of violence in Jeremiah; and intertextuality, reception, and history of interpretation. The 22 essays examine such topics as whether ancient readers of the books of Hosea and Micah would be competent to read the Book of Jeremiah, choosing marginality as resistance in Jeremiah 40:1-6, the monstrous feminine in the book of Jeremiah, and how early modern English culture still influences the reading of the prophet.
