商品簡介
Before the crise de vers diagnosed by St?phane Mallarm? in the 1880s, musical rhythms concerned note values and repeated patterns, and literary rhythms were ascertained through the measured patterns of metrical verse. Yet the crisis of verse abolished these certainties, with free verse and prose poetry challenging the supremacy of old countable rhythms. Nevertheless, the belief that rhythm is fundamental to literature survived these developements. Outlining a theory that can measure rhythms as they exist outside of patterned convention, this volume traces rhythm as it moves through the work of post-crisis writers, such as Paul Val?ry and Virginia Woolf, and the Dadaists. The text situates this theory right between rhythm's elusiveness in general and the specific force of its presence in works of literature. It considers the strange history of Russian verse under Communism and the writings of Jacques R?da, Julio Cort?zar, and John Wilkinson.
