Teenage Boys and High School English

Pirie teaches high school English in Ontario, Canada. He argues that it's time for educators to address the difficulties of being a male teenager in an English class with the same energy and commitment applied in recent years to the problems of female students in math. He incorporates findings from research in psychology, sociology, linguistics, and education to address the challenges teenage boys face in reading and writing, as well as speaking, listening, thinking and feeling, and suggests practical strategies teachers can use to help their male students overcome some of the hurdles to success in their English classes.
