中文成語和英文一起背，效果加倍！

「一口氣背中文成語學英文」從構想到付諸實現，失敗了很多次，我們再接再勵，終於成功發明這個學英文的新方法。所謂「一口氣」，就是要背得快，而不忘記。我們利用中文成語的連貫性編排，一次同時解決你中英文作文、翻譯的問題。這也是一本修身養性的書，和朋友一起，中英文出口成章，將會令人敬佩。
有些成語，像「金蟬脫殼」，「殼」有二種發音，即ㄎㄜˊ和 ㄑㄧㄠˋ，書中都有說明；又如「毛手毛腳」，有二種意思，在書中都有註明。英文翻譯精挑細選，說出來的英文，一定要讓外國人聽得懂。
有些成語平常少用，但大陸人常用，也一併收錄。如「鳥槍換砲」，在連續劇中常出現。有些中文成語看起來是形容詞，如「八面玲瓏」，英文說成a
smooth operator，用名詞翻譯較恰當，這種情況很普遍。如果你看到一個人很用功，你可對他說：You are a good student.（你很用功。）你看到一個人很會管理，可說：You are a good manager.（你很會管理。）有些成語像「杯弓蛇影」，也可以說成「蛇影杯弓」，為了配合記憶，我們選擇「蛇影杯弓」，在書中都有明確的交待。

如何背「中文成語英譯」
書中對中文成語和英文翻譯有詳盡的解釋，如中文成語「一清二楚」不懂，可查閱「背景說明」，如果不懂英文為什麼要用crystal clear，書中會告訴你，它是慣用語，固定用法，也告訴你其他同義成語。

UNIT 2 「一～九」開頭的中文成語英譯
下面成語是用數字排列，每三句話又有關連，很好背。九個中文和英文成語一起背，背至20秒，終生不忘記。

【背景說明】
1.一(ㄧ)清(ㄑㄧㄥ)二(ㄦˋ)楚(ㄔㄨˇ)
表示「很清楚、很明白」（= perfectly clear）。相當於英文成語是：crystal clear，成語中的crystal {:krIstL } 是「水晶」，為什麼用名詞修飾形容詞呢？因為它是慣用語，固定用法，字面意思是「像水晶一樣清楚」，也就是「很清楚」。
例如：The answer is crystal clear.（這答案一清二楚。）

= as clear as noon
= as plain as day
= as plain as the nose on your face
= beyond the shadow of a doubt
= perfectly clear

字典上寫as clear as daylight，但美國人不習慣用
daylight。網路上的字典寫as plain as the nose in your face，美國人則習慣用on your face。

2.兩(ㄌㄧㄤˇ)敗(ㄅㄞˋ)俱(ㄐㄩˋ)傷(ㄕㄤ)
表示「兩方都受苦」。例如：Both sides suffered in the war.（那場戰爭，兩敗俱傷。） Both sides suffer.
= Both sides lose. (兩敗俱傷。)

（兩敗俱傷的局面）

相反的是a win-win situation（雙贏的局面）。

3.三(ㄙㄢ)思(ㄙ)而(ㄦˊ)行(ㄒㄧㄥˊ)
也可說成「三思而後行」，相當於英文諺語：Think twice. 美國人也常說：Look before you leap. 字面意思是「要跳以前先看一看。」也就是「三思而行。」，等於Think twice. 例如：When it comes to starting your own business, it is wise to think twice.（說到自己創業，三思而行是明智的。）

4.四(ㄙˋ)面(ㄇㄧㄢˋ)八(ㄅㄚ)方(ㄈㄤ)
表示「各個方向；到處」，也就是：from every side。
例如：He was being attacked from every side.（他遭受四面八方的攻擊。）

= far and wide
= all over

5.五(ㄨˇ)光(ㄍㄨㄤ)十(ㄕˊ)色(ㄙㄜˋ)
表示「色彩眾多；色彩繽紛」，英文說成：bright with many colors。例如：The rainbow is bright with many colors.（彩虹五光十色。）

6.六(ㄌㄧㄡˋ)親(ㄑㄧㄣ)不(ㄅㄨˊ)認(ㄖㄣˋ)
字面意思是「所有親戚都不認」，指「毫不留情；不講情義」，英文解釋：turn one’s back on one’s flesh and blood，而turn one’s back on字面意思是「轉身背向」，引申為「背棄；不理會」，one’s flesh and blood字面意思是「某人的肉和血」，引申為「血親；親戚」。
例如：Despite being angry with his father, he
couldn’t turn his back on his flesh and blood.（儘管他對他父親不滿，他也無法六親不認。）

= one’s relatives
= one’s family

7.七(ㄑㄧ)嘴(ㄗㄨㄟˇ)八(ㄅㄚ)舌(ㄕㄜˊ)
表示「人多口雜；議論紛紛」，英文為：all talking at once，at once的主要意思是「立刻」，在此作「同時」解，等於at the same time。例如：The children got excited and began all talking at once.（小孩子很興奮，開始七嘴八舌。）

= all talking on top of one another
= all talking together
on top of one another字面意思是「在彼此的上面」，引申為「一起」。

8.八(ㄅㄚ)面(ㄇㄧㄢˋ)玲(ㄌㄧㄥˊ)瓏(ㄌㄨㄥˊ)
形容人「處世圓滑，面面俱到」，要做個「八面玲瓏的人」，英文說成：a smooth operator。【smooth

精明幹練的人】例如：Joining the after-school social club taught Jane to be a smooth operator.

9.九(ㄐㄧㄡˇ)霄(ㄒㄧㄠ)雲(ㄩㄣˊ)外(ㄨㄞˋ)
形容「又高又遠的地方」，中文常說「把～拋到九霄雲外」，英文成語就是cast～to the winds【cast { kZst } 1扔】也可寫成fling～to the winds或throw～to the winds。【fling { flIG } 1扔；投擲】例如：Let’s cast caution to the winds and have a good time tonight.（我們把告誡拋到九霄雲外，今晚好好玩一玩吧。）winds是「風」，可用單數或複數，在此 cast to the winds是慣用語，固定用法。
