Some Problems on Nonlinear Hyperbolic Equations and Applications

The 20 studies in this collection began as lectures at the French-Chinese Summer Institute on Applied Mathematics, held in September 2008 at Fudan University in China for graduate students, researchers, and junior faculty. They cover mathematical and numerical analyses of strongly nonlinear plasma models, and exact controllability and observability for quasilinear hyperbolic systems and applications. Among the topics are asymptotic regimes for plasma physics with strong magnetic fields, a Bloch decomposition-based method for high frequency waves in periodic media, relaxation-time limits in bipolar hydrodynamic models for semiconductors, the logarithmic decay of hyperbolic equations with arbitrary small boundary damping, and control problems for fluid equations.
