In this introduction to the history of women's involvement in the visual arts, Chadwick (art, San Francisco State University) surveys art by women from the Middle Ages through the present, looking at issues of gender, class, ethnicity, and sexuality. The book does not provide biographical facts about artists; instead, it seeks to reframe the issues raised by feminist research in the arts and to discuss the ideologies that have shaped production of art by women and the representation of women in art. This fifth edition contains a new chapter tracing the development of feminist art history and pedagogy from the 1970s to the present, and a review of recent major female artists from around the world. The book includes a wealth of color and b&w photos, paintings, drawings, and other art pieces throughout. Chadwick has written other books on art.
