商品簡介
Bartlett (psychology, Oregon State U.; Willamette U.) argues that psychological normality cannot serve as a justifiable standard for distinguishing mental health and mental illness and that today's definitions of mental disorders are based on conceptual and empirical error and a disregard for scientific standards of validity. Rather than resorting to philosophical or epistemological arguments, the author uses the tools and frameworks of psychology to examine psychology itself. He decries the epidemic of materialism and resulting cultural impoverishment stemming from the values of those who are psychologically normal, and critiques the psychology of peer review and editorial bias and the epidemic and transmission of mediocrity. Appendices suggest some practical applications of the author's new approach and offer an explanation of the normal distribution curve. Annotation c2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
