Fieldwork for this study began in 1981-82, at which time Tauya (of the Madang family) was the language of daily life for the 400 people living in the Ramu River valley in Papua New Guinea. Children and some adults were also fluent in Tok Pisin, and only one person was fluent in English--two languages that became much more prevalent over the ten-year period in which two more fieldtrips were conducted, the most recent in 1992.
