In the late 1860s, German psychiatrists envisioned clinical hospitals (or asylums) removed from urban settings as the future of the profession. However by 1917, the end of the period studied by Engstrom (Center for Human and Health Sciences, Humboldt U., Germany), smaller university clinics in urban settings "had come to represent the epitome of professional power and knowledge in German psychiatry." In discussing the historical reasons for this shift from the perspective of economies of power and knowledge, Engstrom analyzes the debates over professional jurisdictions over the various psychiatric tasks, including laboratory and clinical research, professional training, and "socio-hygienic prophylaxis."
