Fracture Mechanics in Layered and Graded Solids ― Analysis Using Boundary Element Methods

This volume describes the new boundary element method (BEM) based on two fundamental solutions and new analyses and results for the fracture mechanics of layered and functionally graded materials, meant to overcome the mathematical degeneration associated with the solitary use of the displacement boundary integral equation for cracked bodies by developing the multi-region and single-region methods of BEMs. It covers implementation of the method, including algorithms for the evaluation of various singular integrals in the boundary element formulations; the fundamentals of elasticity and fracture mechanics; Yue's solution of a 3D multilayered elastic medium and boundary element method; application of the method to crack problems; analysis of penny-shaped and elliptical cracks in functionally graded materials; the dual boundary element method; analysis of rectangular cracks; and boundary element analysis of fracture mechanics in transversely isotropic bi-materials.
