Landmarks ― An Exploration of Great Rocks

This book is an account of travels round the world, in Africa, America, Australia, and Europe, to discover the significance of great cliffs and outcrops, to see at first hand how people have lived in their shadows or on their faces and summits. David Craig, deeply influenced by the upstanding ruggedness of the granite crags of his Scottish birthplace, set out to visit as many great rocks as he could, 'to touch them, climb them or walk around them, and to find out what they meant'. He calls his book a 'meditation on rock' - it is in fact a wonderfully evocative exploration of the myths, cultural monuments and physical habitations which people have built on the rock of ages, close to the margin of survival.
