Barna and Pet<’o> map the post-World War II justice process in Hungary, in order to understand how memory develops and evolves and to face up to the consequences. They examine the history of the people’s tribunals by means of a new methodology which rises above ideological considerations and the methodological problems of earlier investigative frameworks to bring about a new level of awareness. Focusing on 1945 to 1949, they seek to determine which people were drawn into the transitional justice process and how the people’s tribunals functioned with particular regard to gendered aspects, and to reveal the effects of these tribunals on post-Holocaust Jewish identity.
