商品簡介
For well over one hundred years, the Hudson River piers in Greenwich Village bustled with the maritime commerce that made New York the greatest port in the country. But after years of strikes and the introduction of containerized shipping, these once glorious structures fell into disuse. In time, many of them burned while others collapsed into the river, and by 1990, only the remnants were left.
Yet there was a moment in time - fifteen years, perhaps - when the decaying piers became the venue of a thriving other life. The ravaged iron structures became the Jones Beach of Manhattan; rotting pier decks served as stages for music, dance, and acrobats; fishermen trawled for eel and old tires; and the collapsing structures lent their own eerie beauty to a waterfront that had seen better days.
Happily, many of these extraordinary scenes were captured on film by photographer Shelley Seccombe. Between 1972 and 1985, Ms. Seccombe created an archive of the shenanigans and unexpected moments of wonder that characterized the piers in this period. It is a breathtaking record of a waterfront long since past.
Still, as the old decays and disappears there is always something new to replace it. And the Greenwich Village waterfront is no exception. The "something new" here is Hudson River Park, opened in the Village in 2003. Where the piers splayed out into the River to greet arriving ships, piers splay out again, but this time they are park spaces rather than loading docks and gantries. They are, in a way, the future that Ms. Seccombe's images predicted, places where people come to get close to the water, lie in the sun, listen to currents, and wonder at the passing vessels. After one hundred fifty years, the waterfront has become the public's domain again - and an extraordinary one.
Still, the gritty past is not altogether lost. This book, with Shelley Seccombe's remarkable photographs, calls up that era along the waterfront that offered color, comedy, and drama - long gone but, thanks to these images, not forgotten.
