Breaking through conventional periodization of history, historians examine the dynamics of religious renewal and the pastoral efficacy of religious orders from the early 15th to the early 17th centuries, question received verdicts on the role and viability of these ecclesiastical bodies during the period leading up to the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, and elucidate the mechanisms of religious identity formation in the processes of normative centering connected with reform initiatives undertaken within the religious orders and within the Church at large. Bert Roest, Ph.D. (1975), teaches Medieval History at Radboud University Nijmegen. His most recent publications includeOrder and Disorder: The Poor Clares Between Foundation and Reform (Brill, 2013), andFranciscan Learning, Preaching and Mission c. 1220-1650(Brill, 2015). Johanneke Uphoff is currently a doctoral student at the University of Groningen within the project groupCities of Readers: Religious Literacies in the Long 15th Century. Her research investigates the participation of lay people in the transmission of religious knowledge.
