商品簡介

The book reflects the author's opinions, and not necessarily the views of EHGBooks.

The Harmonious Culture Development Foundation (HCDF), Juexue Culture Center, was established in 2013 in Texas, USA, by North American disciples of the Chan Buddhism Zen School. As a charitable organization committed to promoting peace, improving health, popularizing Awakening Study cultural education, and fostering social harmony, it upholds the Buddhist spirit of worldly engagement combined with the essence of self-cultivation from the Zen School. The foundation seeks to make positive contributions to society and benefit the public.

The foundation's mission is to deeply explore the inner value and meaning of life, with a focus on "awakening individual life." It strives to facilitate communication, interaction, and the integration of information and energy within life systems; optimize these systems, purify the mind, and cultivate character; practice the values of life; and create an environment defined by "freedom, equality, and fraternity."

The HCDF adopts the guiding principle of "Buddhism in the secular world, secularism in Buddhism" and is grounded in the spiritual foundation of "equality of all beings, self-awakening, and awakening others." It integrates the concept of "harmonious unification” from Awakening Study into social practice. The foundation collaborates with various sects, organizations, and groups to promote and implement activities centered on humanism, health, spiritual growth, and social purification. These efforts aim to promote physical and mental harmony, enhance quality of life, stimulate infinite wisdom, and realize the highest value of life.

FORWARD- When Flowers Bloom, We will Meet When the Moon is Full

The English edition of 《Only the Fragrance Remains as ever》was compiled by several of Zen Master Xingwu’s disciples within a short period. Our intention was to introduce Zen Master ’s experiences, personality, thoughts, and the hardships he endured to readers in the English-speaking world.
We have strived to maintain the factual integrity while making the text more literary and readable. However, we are not professional writers, and given the complexity and sensitivity of the two persecutions Zen Master Xingwu has suffered, we have organized the book chronologically into four time periods. As each period brings different events, our writing style may vary accordingly. In this hurried process, we humbly apologize for any imperfections that may fail to do justice to the master and the readers.
Zen Master has now been wrongfully imprisoned for another ten years and three months following his second arrest. In the depths of the desert, no word of him has surfaced. The path of spreading the Dharma is fraught with life-threatening risks. Perhaps it is true that faith must be tested with life and death to truly find refuge in both body and soul.
Zen Master Xingwu is the 88th-generation Dharma heir of the Heart Sect lineage. As a child, he was introduced to secluded cultivation in Wuyi Mountain, Fujian Province of China by a senior monk, and at the age of nineteen, he was instructed by his master to enter the secular world. He founded the Huazang Heart Sect, dedicating his life to protecting sentient beings, advocating for peace and mutual love, and striving for a harmonious society—essentially working to create a Pure Land on Earth. Even though he knew the Dharma was fragile and obstacles were many, he tirelessly worked for the welfare of all beings. In 1998, he was imprisoned for submitting reform suggestions to the central government. Over the past thirty years, he has been framed and imprisoned twice, enduring severe hardships, yet remaining steadfast. To this day, he remains in prison.
For the past thirty years, Zen Master Xingwu has advocated and practiced “Humanistic Buddhism.” He pioneered "Life Sciences," founded the "Huazang Holistic Hospital," introduced the "Awakening Studies" curriculum, and initiated the "Global Kindness" and "Global Citizen Mutual Love" movements. Despite these efforts that aimed to benefit both the country and its people, they were falsely labeled as threats to national security. What crime has the Zen Master committed? Where is justice? Where is the moral order?
Humanity may find vaccines for all viruses, but it will never find a cure for the loss of conscience. The first sign of moral decay is indifference to the truth. A growing number of spectators and perpetrators alike are building a suffocating wall of ignorance. They fail to see that the injustices suffered by a few are a threat to all. In the end, no one can escape the consequences, and no one remains untouched by these injustices.
Zen Master Xingwu’s experiences represent a classic case of religious persecution against Han Chinese Buddhism in mainland China. We sincerely urge people to investigate the facts, uphold their conscience, and expose the truth behind the so-called "first case of an evil cult." We also hope that through this book, readers will come to know the real Zen Master Xingwu, and understand the person behind the label of “cult leader.”
The accounts of Zen Master Xingwu’s life were collected from his conversations with disciples over thirty years, of which only about a dozen years were spent in freedom. As a young man, he was open and lively, occasionally chatting about daily life with his disciples. Out of curiosity about their master’s experiences, the disciples gradually gathered vivid stories of his early life. Before his first imprisonment, Zen Master Xingwu used his special gifts to heal and help others, teaching his disciples about Life Sciences. His disciples compiled and published books such as 《Reflections on Life》 and 《The Bell of Zen》.
After his first imprisonment, Zen Master Xingwu disseminated the teachings of the Heart Sect widely online. His disciples compiled his answers to various questions into 《Lighting the Heart Lamp》. Before his second imprisonment, knowing that time was running out, the zen master gave intensive teachings for several months. These teachings were recorded, compiled, and published as《 Essence of the Sect》 and 《Entering the World Without Emptying the Tathagatagarbha》.
While in prison, Zen Master Xingwu planned to give up his life for the Dharma and painstakingly wrote down the key practices of various Buddhist schools on napkins, considering these his final instructions. His disciples managed to smuggle these writings out, compiling them into the book 《Holding the Flower in the Dharma Tragedy》. This precious Dharma text bypasses complex doctrines, directly addressing the core teachings in a simple and direct manner. It is a treasure, unparalleled in both ancient and modern times.
As direct disciples of Zen Master Xingwu, we feel deep sorrow and shame when we think of the suffering our master has endured for his unyielding defense of the Dharma. His self-sacrifice to continue the Buddha’s wisdom for the benefit of all sentient beings fills us with both grief and anger. We sincerely hope that readers will come to understand the true Zen Master Xingwu through this book and appreciate all his efforts to create a Pure Land on Earth.
We also hope to convey the ZenMaster’s heartfelt message through this book:

"In the Buddhist community, both enemies and friends are equal; I bear no resentment toward anyone. If one day, those who were forced to bear false witness against me reveal the truth to the world, and the judicial authorities exonerate me, restoring my innocence, I will no longer carry this eternal disgrace, which shames both the Buddhist community and discourages the fourfold assembly of disciples, severing the Buddha’s wisdom. If this wish is fulfilled, I will dedicate all my accumulated merits from lifetimes of practice as an offering of gratitude!"

Under the vast heavens, across boundless China, we, the children of the Buddha's land, pray together for the Zen Master’s early and safe return!
Homage to Vairochana, the Dharma Body Buddha!
Namo Huazang!

Respectfully,

Dharma heir Disciples of the Heart Sect

Selected Calligraphy of Zen Master Xingwu

Afterword

書摘/試閱

"The labels the world has given me are numerous: monk, layperson, master, life scientist, fraud, founder of Huazang Heart Dharma, criminal, ex-convict, Dharma heir of the Heart Sect, teacher, and a high-risk person for social instability, among others! Therefore, I advise my friends and students to be cautious in associating with me. While I am still alive, anyone who feels wronged or deceived by me should quickly expose me to the world. Those who owe me or have benefited from me, let's settle it all here and now. Finally, I want to say: I am just me!"
-- Wu Zeheng (Zen Master Xingwu)

"I have spoken for so many years, and it all boils down to this: there should be no distinction between you and me, between Buddhism and Taoism, between monastics and laypeople, and there should be no division between Buddhism and Christianity. Do not create such distinctions; do not use human-made religious forms to create another form of conflict. This is karmic obstruction and a grave sin. Some people criticize me and Huazang, but I remain unchanged. Huazang is not a sect, nor is it a religion. Through my teachings and the abilities I have acquired, I serve society and help more people, repaying the offerings from all sentient beings. I refuse to be a parasite."
-- Wu Zeheng ( Zen Master Xingwu)
