《中華帝國的衰落》作為美國多所大學採用的中國近代史教科書，文字簡潔流暢，內容通俗易懂。書稿有別于傳統通史的編年體敘述，而從構成傳統社會主要結構的農民、士紳、商人三個群體入手，詳細剖析了中華帝國如何一步步實現建立秩序，走向強盛，陷入困境，再次建立秩序的過程。在中國近代史的歷史分期方面，魏斐德採納北美漢學界的觀點，敘述的內容不僅包括鴉片戰爭之後的歷史，還向上追溯到晚明時期，使得作品極具“一家之言”的特
