本書是美國Robert L. Mott教授所著Machine Elements in Mechanical Design(Fourth Edition,2004)的縮編版。縮編者在保持原書特色和風格的前提下,根據我國機械設計課程的教學要求,刪去了原書中與我國其他先修課程重復的部分內容,將原書23章縮編為16章,并將計量單位轉換為公制。縮編后的內容包括:機械設計概論,帶傳動與鏈傳動,齒輪傳動與蝸桿傳動,軸,軸聯接件(鍵、聯軸器、密封),滾動軸承,滑動軸承,緊固件,彈簧,機座,離合器與制動器,設計大作業等。
本書可作為高等學校工科機械類專業機械設計課程的雙語教學教材,也可供從事機械專業的教師、研究生或工程技術人員參考。
