台灣是一個海洋國家，高雄市更是國內唯一的港口型態大都會區，深深受到海洋的影響，而海洋也的確引領著高雄乃至於南台灣發展出獨特的人文、經濟、風俗及生活型態。為了將海洋與高雄結合的特殊人文環境、產業與歷史引介給國人，提供觀眾更豐富生動的海洋科學知識，體驗人類與大自然唇齒相依的緊密關係，國立科學工藝博物館特地與高雄市政府海洋局合作籌畫推出「海洋高雄特展」，期能讓觀眾瞭解「海洋」原來如此有趣，與我們如此地接近，更進而對海洋多一份了解，對自然環境多一份關懷。而為了記錄特展之內容及成果，特出版本專輯。
Taiwan is a maritime country and Kaohsiung City is the island's only harbor metropolis. The sea runs deep in Kaohsiung City and has nurtured the unique culture, economy, customs and lifestyles found in Kaohsiung and throughout southern Taiwan.
To show the people of Taiwan how the sea and Kaohsiung has combined to create a unique cultural landscape, industries and history, the National Science and Technology Museum has partnered with the Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau to launch the "Marine Kaohsiung Exhibition". By introducing visitors to marine science, knowledge and the symbiotic relationship between Mankind and Mother Nature, the exhibition hopes that people will discover how interesting the "Oceans" are and how much a part of our everyday lives it is.
