German scholar of Old Testament exegesis and theology Reventlow (1929-2010) comes to a pivotal era in his history of biblical interpretation, which witnessed the rise of humanism, the Renaissance, and the Reformation and its aftermath. As throughout the series, he can notice only the most influential figures and works. His topics include Marsilio Ficino reading the Bible with Plato, Erasmus following the philosophy of Christ, the Zurich Baptists taking the commandments of Jesus with radical seriousness, and Hugo Grotius attending to the historical background of the scripture. The late Henning Graf Reventlow was Professor Emeritus of Old Testament Exegesis and Theology, Faculty of Protestant Theology, University of the Ruhr, Bochum, Germany. He was the author or editor of numerous volumes, including The Authority of the Bible and the Rise of the Modern World (Fortress); Problems of Old Testament Theology in the Twentieth Century (Fortress); and Creative Biblical Exegesis: Christian and Jewish Hermeneutics through the Centuries (JSOT Press).
