Often we are going too fast to see the significance of defining moments. Sometimes we can be too blinkered to recognize their full impact. It is often only as we look back that we see the full significance of key moments in our lives.

In our work the pressure might be relentless. We are focused on one task after another. Striving for targets leads to a one track mind and we might fail to see and enjoy moments of significance for us.

When we understand the defining moments we are going through, it helps put our work and life in perspective. It enables us to enjoy and relish those moments of significance and to move on in a constructive way from moments that might feel destructive.

Peter Shaw is a Partner at Praesta Partners, which specializes in executive coaching at senior levels. His coaching clients include senior people in the public, private and voluntary sectors including Senior Government officials, High Court Judges, Bishops, UK Ambassadors and Chief Executives. Peter is a Visiting Professor of Leadership Development at Newcastle University Business School and an Honorary Fellow at St John's College, Durham. He was formerly a Director General within the UK Government and was a member of five different Government Department Boards. Peter is a Reader in the Anglican Church. He is the author of a number of influential books and articles on leadership and coaching and has facilitated workshops on these themes across four continents.
