Pediatric surgery is a surgical subspecialty which has relatively fewer members and a shorter history than other surgical subspecialties. In the courses of medical education, few lectures, even deficient, focus on the surgery for these young patients. The authors of Concise Atlas of Pediatric Surgery are well experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of common and important pediatric surgical diseases for many years. Pediatric surgery is a surgical subspecialty which has relatively fewer members and a shorter history than other subspecialties. During the course of medical education, it is usually neglected and relegated to a few, if any, cursory lectures. Discussions are usually limited to a handful of more common and important diseases. Sometimes, lectures touch on a few less common conditions. As a result, students typically graduate with very little knowledge and understanding of pediatric surgery.
With the expansion of technology and modern medical knowledge, each field has become more and more specialized, and physicians tend to become too narrowly focused on their specialties. Having practiced pediatric surgery for more than twenty years, we believe that a simple, reader-friendly atlas accompanied by short notes in pediatric surgery will facilitate a proper survey and quick understanding of the field. We hope that this Atlas will enable young doctors-in-training to acquire, in a short time, a basic understanding of the spectrum of diseases in pediatric surgery. The Atlas is organized around a series of slides followed by short notes. They represent the most common and important diseases gleaned from our experience. Unfortunately, some diseases, such as gastric perforation and cloacal exstrophy, cannot be included in the book because some of the slides have been lost or have degraded in quality. Nevertheless, we hope that this compilation will serve as a useful handbook for medical and nursing students, interns, pediatric and surgical residents, as well as other medical and allied professionals who are dedicated to the care of children’s health.
